Wills
WHY YOU NEED A WILL
Making a will ensures that when you die your estate is shared according to your wishes. Your estate might include a house or flat, savings, shares and investments and any personal possessions; these collectively are your ‘estate’.
Everyone should make a will but it is especially important if you have a family or partner and you have savings, investments, insurance policies or you own your own business.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DIE WITHOUT A WILL
If you die without making a will or your will is invalid, you have no say in what happens to your estate. Instead, the Rules of Intestacy will divide your estate in a pre-determined way and this may not be to the people that you wish to benefit. Equally it may not be shared in the most tax effective way.
If for example you live with someone, even if married, are in a civil partnership or have step children, they may not automatically inherit your estate. By making a will, you can make sure that your lifetime’s wealth is passed to whomever you choose.
HOW DO I MAKE A WILL
You can do it yourself using a DIY kit obtainable from High Street Stationers but it is strongly recommended that you do not go down this avenue. To ensure that you achieve what you want in your will and to ensure that there is no conflict and your wishes are clearly expressed as well as making sure the document is legally acceptable, use a solicitor or professional firm such as ourselves.
